A Glimpse of Vulnerability Amidst Protest: The Child Beggar of Accra
On October 5, 2024, as thousands rallied against illegal mining in Ghana, I found myself drawn to a poignant scene on the streets of Accra, specifically in Shiashie. Amidst the fervor of the protests, a young boy lay asleep on the pavement—a child beggar already facing the harsh realities of life.
As a photographer, I was struck by the stark contrast between the energy of the protesters demanding change and the vulnerability of this child, oblivious to the world around him. I couldn’t help but ponder, “While the youth fight for a better future, what does this child dream of? What is he protesting against in his silent suffering?”
In that moment, I felt a wave of gratitude for my own circumstances. The youth strive for systemic change, while this child loiters, hoping for a mere pittance to survive another day. It’s a reminder of the complex layers of hardship that coexist in our society.
As we advocate for a brighter tomorrow, let’s not forget those whose struggles often go unnoticed. The voices of the youth and the silent pleas of the vulnerable are both essential in shaping the future we all hope to see. To this , I say WE ARE ALL INVOLVED .
